Eligibility: Open to persons who have shown outstanding ability in scientific research. Restrictions may be placed on positions at the time of advertisement.

Length of Tenure: To retirement. After 10-15 years of Royal Society funding the professor moves on to the established staff at his/her host university.

Place of Tenure: UK

Number Offered: Varies.

Frequency: Advertised in Nature, Science and New Scientist as vacancies occur.

Value: Professorial minimum plus 40% (on UK university salary scales for non-clinical academics and related staff), with research expenses and start-up grants.
